Polperro

Polperro lives up to its reputation as Cornwall's most picturesque fishing village. It may not have inspired great art, but thousands of amateur artists come here with dreams of securing a place in the summer exhibitions at London's Royal Academy. Colour-washed cottages crowd the steep hillsides converging on the stream that empties into the tiny harbour, and the gates of cottages served by narrow lanes and even narrower alleys often open on the roofs of dwellings below. It's not hard to see why the fisherfolk were able to conduct without interference their alternative occupation of smuggling rum and tobacco. The 'Preventive Men', aboard their hulk moored at the quayside because no one would give them lodging, stood little chance against the smugglers with their hiding places, secret passages and back doors that mysteriously opened on the cliffs.
